Caught the 10:15 bus to Berchtesgaden - took about 45 minutes to get there. Grabbed a coffee (very cold and a little damp) and then checked in for our tour. We headed out at 1:15 for about a four hour trip that included a ride all the way up to the Eagle's Nest and the Documentation Center and the Bunker Tour. Everyone on the bus was asked to tell where they were from and there were two other couples from the Portland area on the tour. We arrived at the Eagle's Nest (about 6,000 feet), walked through a long tunnel and then took an elevator to the top. When we arrived it was cold, cloudy and snowing. The Eagles Nest has three main rooms and was built as a tea room (it was completed in 13 months). As it turns out Hitler spent very little time there and the allies ignored it when they bombed all of the other strategic targets in the area (of which there were many).
From there we went to the Documentation Center and learned more about the historical events. And we got to explore some of the massive bunker system that was built in that area. They spared no expense and the infrastructure was amazing. The entire area has miles of these elaborate tunnels, some of which connected the major leaders at that time.
We caught the 5:15 bus back to Salzburg and had a very good dinner in the old town. Tomorrow we pick up our car and head to Tirol area of Austria.
